Questions
answered. Honestly.

No fluff, no sales pitch. Just straight answers to the questions we hear most often — including the ones about why we do things differently.

Pricing

What does it cost?

Transparent pricing, no hidden fees. You know exactly what you're paying and what you're getting before anything starts.

How much does a trades website cost?
Three packages, all one-off payments:
  • Get Online — £1,675 — 1 page, 10 working days. A professional single-page site that gets you online properly.
  • Get Found — £2,250 — 3 pages, 7 working days. Full SEO setup, Calendly booking embed, go-live report.
  • Get Ahead — £2,999 — 5 pages, 5 working days. Everything in Get Found plus Local SEO, Google Business Profile, auto SMS missed-call reply, and first month care plan free.
The care plan is £150/month — optional, cancel anytime, no contract. See the full pricing breakdown →
Why is there an upfront cost instead of monthly payments?
Because we believe you should own what you pay for. Monthly subscriptions mean you're renting — the moment you stop paying, you lose everything. With FSG you pay once and the site is yours forever. After two years, a monthly competitor has cost you more and you still own nothing. Run the numbers on BUILT at £99/month — that's £1,188 a year, £3,564 over three years, and you'll never own the site.
How does the payment split work?
45% deposit to start the build. 55% when you're happy with the site — before it goes live. You only pay the remainder once you've reviewed the site, requested any changes, and are completely satisfied. The deposit gives us the confidence to start; the split gives you the protection of not paying in full until the job is done right.
Are there any ongoing costs?
No ongoing costs to FSG after the site goes live. Your site is hosted on Netlify's free tier — so hosting costs nothing. The only optional ongoing cost is the care plan at £150/month, which is entirely your choice and cancellable with 30 days' notice. You might also pay for your domain name separately (typically £10–15/year through your domain registrar), but that's between you and them, not us.
Which package is right for me?
As a rough guide: Get Online if you just need a professional presence online and you're not in a rush to rank on Google. Get Found if you want to actually show up in local searches and take bookings online. Get Ahead if you're serious about growing and want the full setup — Local SEO, GBP, auto SMS, and someone actively working on your site from month one. If you're not sure, drop us a message and we'll tell you straight which one fits your situation.

Process

How does it work?

From yes to live in under two weeks. Here's exactly what to expect.

What happens after I get in touch?
We'll come back to you within a few hours — usually the same day. We'll have a quick conversation about your business, what you're looking for, and which package fits. If you're happy to go ahead, we send a deposit invoice. Once that's paid, we send you a simple onboarding form asking for the basics — your services, your area, any photos you have. Then we get to work.
How long does it take?
Working days from when we receive your completed onboarding form — Get Online is 10 days, Get Found is 7 days, Get Ahead is 5 days. The clock starts when we have what we need from you. We give you a clear list upfront so there are no delays — most tradespeople fill it in within a day or two. Weekends and bank holidays don't count.
What do you need from me to get started?
Not much. We write all the copy so you don't need to write anything yourself. We just need:
  • Your business name, phone number, and email
  • Your services and the areas you cover
  • Any photos of your work (phone photos are fine)
  • Your logo if you have one — if not, we work around it
  • Any accreditations (Gas Safe, NICEIC etc.) you want displayed
That's it. We handle the rest.
Do I need to be involved during the build?
No. Once we have your onboarding form, we build the site without needing anything else from you mid-build. When it's ready, we send you a preview link. You review it, tell us what you'd like changed, and we make the adjustments. You're only needed at the start and the end — we don't interrupt your working day with questions.
What if I don't have a logo?
Not a problem. We work with what you have — even just your business name and your van colours. We'll make it look professional. If you want a full logo design, that's a separate job and we can point you in the right direction. But plenty of the best trades websites don't have a logo — just a well-set name in the right font.
What if I'm not happy with the site?
We make unlimited revisions until you're 100% happy — before the site goes live and before you pay the final 55%. That's our satisfaction guarantee. The job isn't done until you say it is. If after rounds of revisions something still isn't right, we'd rather talk it through directly than push a site live that you're not confident in.

Ownership

Who owns the site?

This is the most important question anyone can ask an agency. Here's the honest answer.

Do I own my website?
Yes. Once the final payment clears, the website is yours outright — the code, the content, the Netlify account, everything. We don't retain copyright, we don't hold any login details you don't have, and we have no ability to take the site down. It belongs to you. You can edit it, move it, give it to someone else to manage, or just leave it running forever. We have no ongoing claim on it.
How is that different from other agencies?
Most monthly subscription agencies — including the big ones like BUILT — retain ownership of your website. If you stop paying, the site disappears. Some agencies go further and retain the copyright in their terms and conditions, meaning even if you export the files, they technically still own them. Always check who owns the copyright on any website you've paid for. With FSG, the copyright transfers to you on completion. Full stop.
I'm currently with another agency. Do I own my current site?
Probably not — but it's worth checking. Look at your existing website's footer. If it says "© [Agency Name]" or "Website by [Company]," that's a sign they may retain the copyright. Also check your original contract for terms around intellectual property. If you're unsure, send us your website address and we'll take a look for you — no charge, no obligation.
What happens to my site if I cancel the care plan?
Nothing. The site keeps running exactly as it is. The care plan is a growth and maintenance service — it's not what keeps your site online. Your Netlify hosting is free and independent of us. If you cancel the care plan, you just stop getting the monthly SEO work, GBP management, and support. The site stays live and still belongs to you.

Technical

The practical stuff.

Hosting, domains, forms, email — the questions that come up once people start thinking about what actually goes into a website.

Where is my site hosted?
On Netlify — one of the most reliable hosting platforms available, used by millions of websites worldwide. The free tier is more than enough for a trades website and has essentially 100% uptime. We set up the account in your name so you're in full control. There's nothing to pay for hosting.
Do I need to buy a domain name?
If you don't already have one, yes — but it's cheap and straightforward. A .co.uk domain typically costs £10–15/year through a registrar like Namecheap, GoDaddy, or 123-reg. We'll help you connect it to your site as part of the build. If you already have a domain somewhere, we'll take care of the DNS configuration.
How does the contact form work?
We use Formspree to handle form submissions — a trusted, reliable service used by thousands of static websites. When a customer fills in your contact form, the details are emailed straight to your inbox. No missed enquiries, no fuss. It's free for basic usage which is more than enough for most trades businesses.
Will my site show up on Google?
Yes — and we do everything to make sure it does quickly. We set up Google Search Console on every build, submit your sitemap directly to Google, and build in all the technical SEO signals from day one. Get Found and Get Ahead include full SEO — title tags, meta descriptions, headings, and alt tags all optimised for your specific trade and area. Local SEO (coverage area pages, citation building, GBP setup) is included on Get Ahead.
What about my business email? Can you sort that?
We don't set up email hosting — that's a separate service usually through Google Workspace (around £5/month for a professional @yourdomain.co.uk email address) or Microsoft 365. What we do handle is the DNS records that protect your email — SPF, DKIM, and DMARC — so your domain can't be spoofed by scammers and your emails don't end up in spam.
Can I update the site myself after it's live?
Technically yes — the code is yours and you can edit it if you're comfortable with HTML. In practice, most tradespeople prefer to ask us to make changes, which we can do quickly on the care plan, or quote as a one-off. We don't build a CMS into the site because CMS systems are exactly what makes WordPress slow and vulnerable — but we make changes easy to request.

Why Not WordPress

Why we don't use
WordPress.

This is the question we hear most often. The short answer: WordPress is the right tool for some jobs. A trades website isn't one of them.

What's wrong with WordPress?
Nothing's inherently wrong with WordPress as a platform — it powers about 40% of the web and it's genuinely useful for content-heavy sites that need a content management system. But for a trades website, it's overkill and it comes with problems that static HTML simply doesn't have.

WordPress vs Static HTML

WordPress

  • Gets hacked via plugin vulnerabilities — regularly
  • Needs constant plugin and core updates
  • Slows down over time as plugins accumulate
  • Requires a database — another thing to break
  • Can be blacklisted by Google after a hack
  • Hosting costs money (shared servers add latency)

Static HTML (what we use)

  • No database — no attack surface to exploit
  • No plugins — nothing to update, nothing to break
  • Loads in under a second on any device
  • Hosts free on Netlify — no server costs
  • Security headers baked in from day one
  • Stays fast forever — no degradation over time
Is my WordPress site at risk right now?
Possibly — and the risk is higher if it hasn't been updated recently. WordPress sites are attacked automatically by bots scanning for known plugin vulnerabilities. You don't have to be targeted specifically — bots try every site they find. Signs your WordPress site has been compromised include: slow load times, your Google Search Console showing spam pages, customers mentioning a warning when they visit your site, or Google showing a "this site may be hacked" warning in search results. If you'd like us to check your current site for free, just get in touch.
How much faster is a static HTML site?
Significantly. A typical WordPress trades site scores 35–60 on Google's PageSpeed for mobile. Our static HTML sites consistently score 90+. The reason is simple — WordPress has to query a database, run PHP, process plugins, and assemble the page every time someone visits. Static HTML is just files — the server sends them instantly with no processing at all.
FSG Static HTML90–100 / 100
Typical WordPress trades site35–60 / 100
Webflow / page builder sites55–75 / 100

Mobile PageSpeed scores. Google uses page speed as a ranking factor — a faster site ranks higher and converts better.

But my current agency uses WordPress and it seems fine.
It might be fine — for now. The issue with WordPress isn't that it always fails, it's that it requires ongoing maintenance to stay secure and fast. Most tradespeople don't know when their WordPress site has been compromised until a customer mentions it or Google flags it. The best time to find out your site has a problem isn't when you've already lost jobs because of it. If you'd like a free audit of your current site, we'll tell you exactly what we find.
Can I update a static HTML site without coding knowledge?
Not without some technical knowledge — and we're honest about that. The trade-off is this: WordPress gives you a dashboard to update content, but it also gives hackers a dashboard to attack. Static HTML doesn't have a dashboard, which is partly why it's so secure. In practice, most of our clients either use the care plan for updates or ask us as one-offs — which we turn around quickly. For a trades website that rarely changes its core content, this is rarely a problem.

After Launch

What happens once
the site is live?

The site going live is the start, not the end. Here's what to expect after go-live.

How long before I start getting enquiries?
It varies. Some clients get enquiries within days — particularly if they share the site on social media or with existing customers who then refer people. For organic Google rankings, expect 4–12 weeks before the site starts appearing for competitive local searches, and longer for more competitive areas. Get Ahead clients tend to see results faster because Local SEO, GBP setup, and citation building all accelerate the process significantly.
What is the care plan and do I need it?
The care plan is £150/month and includes monthly SEO work, Google Business Profile management, automated review request setup, uptime monitoring, priority content updates, and an annual review call. You don't need it — the site will work perfectly without it. But if you want someone actively working on your online presence every month rather than a site that just sits there, it's worth it. No contract, cancel with 30 days' notice.
What if I want to make changes after go-live?
Care plan clients get priority updates included — same week, no fuss. If you're not on the care plan, just get in touch and we'll quote for the changes as a one-off. Simple text changes are usually quick and cheap; adding new pages or sections is a bit more involved. Either way, you're not locked into anything — it's your site and you decide what happens to it.
What if I want to move the site to a different host?
Completely fine — you own the code so you can host it anywhere that serves static files. The code we write is clean, standard HTML and CSS with no proprietary dependencies. Take it to any host you like. We'd probably recommend staying on Netlify since it's free and excellent, but it's your call entirely.
What if I want to give the site to another developer to manage?
Go ahead. It's your site — the code belongs to you and any competent developer can work with clean HTML and CSS. We'd hand over everything: the source files, the Netlify account credentials, the Google Search Console access, all of it. No lock-in, no awkward conversations, no fees for leaving.
